British Airways Holidays is hoping to brighten Blue Monday with a number of discounts on package holidays, giving customers something to look forward to in the year ahead. According to a survey commissioned by British Airways Holidays’ with YouGov, 79 percent of participants agreed that taking a break is good for their mental health. Yet in spite of this, the research also found that 36 percent of British workers did not take their full annual leave.

Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January, typically the third Monday of the month. It is thought that the idea first came about in 2005 in a press release from a travel firm, so it is no wonder so many travel companies jump on it as a time to offer discounts and sales.

The date was said to be the “most depressing” of the year based on an “equation” which looked at factors including finances at that time of year, the weather, time since New Year’s resolutions have been broken, low motivational levels, and the feeling of a need to take action. However, there are conflicting opinions over how accurate this calculation is.

As well as travel firms, many other companies use it as an opportunity for advertising campaigns, discounts and sales. Some companies even name different Mondays in January as Blue Monday.
